A tropical storm warning has been issued for Barbados as Tropical Depression Kirk strengthens to become a Tropical Storm.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Barbados Meteorological Services said Kirk was located near 11.8 degrees north, 52.7 degrees west or about 470 miles east of Barbados.

The storm is packing maximum sustained winds near 45 miles per hour and is moving towards the west near 18 miles per hour.

On its present track, the center of Kirk is expected to pass 50 miles north of Barbados between Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Starting tonight and into tomorrow, Barbados will experience gusty winds, heavy showers, periods of rain and scattered thunderstorms.

The Met office cautions that rainfall accumulations of two-four inches are possible between tonight and Friday morning and therefore flash flooding is likely in low lying areas. Residents are advised to be alert.

A High-Surf advisory and small-craft warning took effect at 6 a.m. today and will expire at  6 a.m. Monday, October 1
