The reduction of cash given in pensions to former Government employees is spreading to all of Barbados’ 50-odd statutory bodies, including the School Meals Service; and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is looking into it.
The union’s acting general secretary Rosalind Smith said that one of her officers had been assigned to the matter and she would await conclusive findings before commenting fully on the situation. But she acknowledged yesterday that those who entered the service of a statutory board after September 1, 1975, would now get only one pension, while those who entered before will continue to get two.
A former School Meals server who entered that service in 1976 and retired a few years ago, said yesterday she received a letter earlier this year informing that her pensions would be cut in May.
“They started mine from May after they sent me a letter from the Treasury. I don’t know if they’re doing it in alphabetical order . . . because I called a girlfriend who started in the service with me but she’s still getting both pensions,” she added.
