A fall-off in enrolment is not only hitting the University of the West Indies, but continuing education programmes at some secondary schools.
Whether it’s Springer Memorial School, The Foundation School, Queen’s College or Frederick Smith Secondary, the lament is the same – there is a decline in students taking courses.
“Over the last three years with the economic recession we have been in we have been experiencing dwindling rolls,” said Pauline Benjamin, principal of Springer Memorial.
“We used to have from 800 to 900 students passing through here, but this term we only had 500.”
