THE BARBADOS Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) yesterday warned that new attempts to regulate the fees charged by its members and to curtail the practices of medical doctors could backfire on the public health system.
BAMP president Carlos Chase was reacting to recent concerns raised at the NATION Talkback town hall meeting about alleged unscrupulous practices by doctors.
Chase said that, contrary to public opinion, the current fees being charged by doctors were not unreasonable.
With annual registration fees for doctors at $2 500 and medical malpractice up to $60 000 annually, he said doctors were in fact faced with a dramatic increase in expenses. (KJ)
