KINGSTON, Jamaica – Junior Minister in the Ministry of National Security, Dr St Aubyn Bartlett, has resigned from the post with immediate effect.
The two-term Government legislator, who had been in a tussle with some of his constituents in the constituency of Eastern St Andrew, offered no reason for the sudden resignation.
However, Bartlett, a Veterinarian has been named among a handful of government Members of Parliament who are said to be in serious political trouble in their constituencies and could be dropped from the general election slate of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Earlier this week a group of JLP supporters gathered at the party’s New Kingston based headquarters on Belmont Road where they called on party officials to block Bartlett from running for the seat in the upcoming election because he was a non-performer and could not bring it back home for the JLP.
On Wednesday, Minister in charge of Information and the Public Service, Arthur Williams told journalists at the weekly Post Cabinet press briefing that Bartlett submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
In recent weeks, Bartlett raised eyebrows when he was entangled in a verbal spat with South West St Catherine Member of Parliament, Everald Warmington over whether the title of “The Most Honourable” is to be attached to Prime Minister Holness.
Bartlett has been quoted as saying that he resigned due to personal matters.
In the 2007 General Election he defeated the People’s National Party (PNP’s) Professor Trevor Munroe. (CMC)
