THE STATE-RUN?National Sports Council (NSC) will be looking for a new Director of Sport within the first month of the New Year.
But the long-serving Erskine King says his retirement, which takes effect from January 13, was on his own volition.
“I have decided to retire while I still have health and strength. I think that I have worked long and hard and I figure that this is the time that I should retire,” King told WEEKEND SPORT yesterday.
King, 65, who has served in the post of Director of Sports for the past 17 years, after replacing the late, Alvin Burgess in 1996, dismissed suggestions that he was asked to retire, saying he could’ve continued working until 2015.
“Nothing like that ever arose. It is a decision I was thinking about for a while but I am still willing to help any association which needs assistance. I will not be lost to Barbados or to sports. I have had some enquiries from some of my colleagues across the region to offer them assistance. Those are things that I will take into consideration but it won’t be like I am leaving a job to take up another one,” he said.
In fact, King, a former Barbados wicket-keeper/batsman had already officially informed the NSC’s Board in writing of his decision to retire, since last October.
