Captain Corbin passes on

Captain Roy Corbin, musician, farmer and retired soldier, is dead.
The former Pic-O-De-Crop calypso judge, who collapsed this morning after attending to his livestock at his Fisherpond, St Thomas home, worked most recently as deputy chairman of the advisory committee of the Government Industrial School, where he himself was confined at age 11 for five years after a brush with the law.
Corbin, 73, also served as a soldier in the 1960s in Jamaica, where he met and followed the career of the creator of Barbados’ spouge beat, Jackie Opel. He also worked in the United States as a consultant for the Export/Import Bank and Legal Services Commission.After returning home in 1988, he worked with the Barbados Regiment, was secretary general of the Barbados Red Cross Society, and coached the Silver Sands Football Club.
But his passion was music, causing him to serve as a NIFCA judge for over a decade, as well as a judge in the Barbados Sound Festival,  Junior Calypso Monarch competition, steel band and tuk band competitions, and the Pic-O-De Crop competition in which he was chief judge twice.Corbin also taught music at St James Secondary School and the Lodge School.
He leaves to mourn his wife Heather as well as adult children and grands. (RJ)
