Seventy-five players teed off but in the end, Ricardo Jarvis and Liza Blakeley emerged winners of the second annual Crane Golf Classic last Sunday at the Barbados Golf Club.
Competing among the low handicap players (12 and under handicap) in the Stableford tournament, Jarvis scored 42 points over 18 holes to win the men’s division while Blakeley won the women’s competition with a score of 36 points.
Blakeley edged out British visitor Patricia Newson and 12-year-old Mavi Vergos for the women’s title, winning on a count-back system after all three players were locked on 36 points.
Jarvis was followed by Collis Lynch (40 points) and Trevor Tasker (37) in the men’s division.
The Stableford system, which is often modified to suit tournament play at the club level, is a popular system in Britain and allows high handicap players to be more competitive.
Unlike traditional scoring methods where the aim is to have the lowest score, under Stableford rules, the objective is to have the highest score.
Rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, as in stroke-play, golfers play against the par score for each hole and score points based on the number of strokes taken.
Among the higher handicapped players in The Crane Resort-sponsored tournament on Sunday were retired Canadian Army Colonel William “Sandy” Dawson with a 24 handicap. A resident guest at The Crane, he won his division scoring 40 points over the 18 holes.
Second was Barbadian Algie Leacock (21 handicap) with 37 points and Roger Moore third, also on 37 points.
Following the competition, players, sponsors and supporters came together for dinner and the award of prizes during a ceremony at The Crane Resort, but Jarvis and Blakeley were absent.
Betty-June Leacock, general manager of the Barbados Golf Club, thanked the players and sponsors for making the tournament a success, while Michael Phillips, general manager of The Crane Resort, said he was impressed with the growth of the classic in two short years.
“This tournament is a good fit with our market positioning, bringing together Barbadians and visitors, and we anticipate that it will be even bigger in 2014,” said Phillips. (PR)
