Local manufacturer Lenstec Barbados Inc. is now controlling 50 per cent of the market share for cataract lenses in China.
Revealing this statistic, Chinese Ambassador to Barbados Wang Ke, said this was an example of opportunities for Barbadian products in China, while suggesting efforts should be made by other manufacturers to search for outlets there for other Barbadian products.
Despite current low production of West Indian Sea Island cotton here, the diplomat said this was a good choice for the Chinese market, though consideration would have to be given to producing large quantities for export.
“In recent years our bilateral trade has been growing steadily,” the Chinese official said, revealing that China was now the fifth largest trading partner for Barbados and the fourth largest export source country to Barbados.
She said, “We are glad to see that your exports to China are growing and I do think there are potentials to explore. To do that, first of all I think the business people have to know more about China, about the market, to know more about how to do business with China and to establish partnerships with their counterparts in China.”
The ambassador recommended Barbadian businesses’ participation in China’s trade fairs such as the big Spring Fair in Canton. (GC)
