SPIKES are hoping their unbeaten run will lead to them being crowned kings of the court.
Basketball’s up and coming third division side is set to put their undefeated record on the line tonight against Pirates as the highlight of the Total Sport Kingz of the Court’s semi-finals at the YMCA.
The St John based side will look to hoist its first ever out-of-season title but face a tough challenge against the perennial championship contenders, who are based at the Pinfold Street venue.
In tonight’s other final four contest, NZ Ballers pit their talents against the amalgamated CF Thunder squad in what is expected to be a very keenly contested affair.
“This year hasn’t been as “big-named” as years gone by, I must admit, but the third division teams that played this year were extremely competitive,” said tournament director Junior “Yank” Cummings.
“So there was really no fall-off in the level of play and I’m expected a lot of action in these upcoming semi-finals and the big final.”
That final is slated for November 27, and the Kirk Patrick Trophy will be awarded to the player with the most points in the game in honour of the slain national player.
Member of Parliament for The City, Patrick Todd, is expected to present the championship cup to the winning team while Barbados Amateur Basketball Association president Derrick Garrett will hand over the Kirk Patrick Trophy on the night.
Now in its fourth year, the tournament is also being used as a fund-raiser to help paint the YMCA court and add additional lights above the playing area. (JM)
