Worthing Beach will remain closed to ensure that the ecological conditions of the swamp and its environs are restored.
This is according to Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Wilfred Abrahams, who said “we have a sensitive and delicate eco-system and it is critical that the balance is right”.
The decision was made following discussions by a Cabinet Sub-Committee comprising the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, the Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Maintenance and the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport.
The Environmental Protection Department will continue to monitor the conditions on the beach. Meanwhile, sea bathers are asked to comply with the National Conservation Commission (NCC) guidelines and refrain from using the closed beach.
The beach was officially closed on Saturday, July 7, to facilitate an environmental exercise which aimed to lower the water levels at the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. However, the timeframe was subsequently extended, as a result of technical difficulties.
