The Geriatric Hospital is understaffed and its nurses are overworked.
That’s the claim from acting deputy general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW),?Roslyn Smith, who contends that there is just one nurse per 18 patients on some wards at the elderly care institution on Beckles Road.
“It’s tough for a nurse to have to supervise as many as 18 patients on a ward but look in on another ward which may have a similar number of patients. So it is a critical situation that the union is obviously concerned about,” Smith said.
She told the MIDWEEK?NATION she understands that there are plans to bring more than 40 elderly patients from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) over to the Geriatric Hospital.
