Betrayed by the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).
That’s how a number of retrenched Transport Board workers described their feelings about the union’s handling of the termination of scores of their colleagues, while complaining about the non-payment of their severance benefits.
The now unemployed individuals, who were among the 3 000 Goverment workers laid off since the start of the year, accused the BWU of not fighting as hard for them as it now is for workers at the National Conservation Commission, which it said did not respect the “last in, first out” principle.
A group of six terminated employees gathered outside the board’s Weymouth headquarters yesterday demanding their severance pay, complaining that since being dismissed on March 3 they had not received money owed to them. (RB)
