Double crown for Deacons

Flow Sentry?Brokers Deacons formalized their status as the double crown queens of Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One volleyball by defeating Freekz Customz Chargers in four sets  on Wednesday at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Deacons just needed one set to add the league title to the knockout crown which they had won at the start of the 2013 season.
They took the first two sets before easing up by allowing Julia Lewis to play the role of setter, but still advanced to a maximum 55 points from 11 victories by defeating Chargers, 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20.
That victory put Deacons out of the range of the dethroned knockout queens, Bryden Rockets.
The Rockets placed second to Deacons as they did in the knockouts by stopping Club United 25-22, 25-21, 25-20, to move to 46 points with a game in hand. Deposed league queens Warrens Jaguars finished their season on 46 points.
Chargers men ended unbeaten and with a maximum 50 points to leave Coverley Medical Centre Deacons as runners up again after struggling from two sets down. Chargers men appeared on court in garish fluorescent green and fuschia wigs to play a less than colourful opening two sets against Deacons.
With Chargers’ key man Mark Lewis tossing his head and his fuschia tresses a la Miss Piggy every time he scored a point to provide tremendous laughter for the crowd, Deacons’ ire was raised as they took offence.
Deacons went on the offensive to grab the first two sets with 15-year-old Andriy Stapleton, Sheldon Roach and Kyle Browne carrying the attack.
However, once Lewis, Damien Danzell and Nicholas Matthias found their range, Chargers rebounded and shut down Roach and Browne with some crushing blocks to take the game 23-25, 12-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-10.
Only Stapleton seemed prepared to continue the fight which proved too little to stop Chargers’ unbeaten season.
Progressive confirmed their third spot by defeating Cawmere 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16. Cawmere finished fourth above the Juniors and Foundation United, who were winless.
