WHEN STUDENTS get promoted to a new form, why not send their teachers with them?
St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony floated this idea Tuesday night at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill campus, after delivering a lecture on Education In The Caribbean: Challenges And Opportunities Facing Small Developing States. It was was organized by UWI and the St Lucia Student Association.
Fielding a question about violence and other problems in schools, Anthony suggested Caribbean countries look at Finland’s and other models of education to come up with a set of “interventions”.
He said that against this backdrop he wanted to see parents assume greater responsibility for raising their children, teachers become more amenable to free after-school lessons, and both unions and teachers recognize the need for change while protecting their turf.
