‘Going national could hurt BYS’

TRANSITIONING from the Barbados Youth Service (BYS) to the National Youth Service will not be in the best interest of the vulnerable youth in society.
That’s the view of senior instructor Ricky Springer.
“The National Youth Service will offer jobs for the upper and middle class, not for those who really need it,” he added.
“We need to keep it as it is because right now it is the so-called lower class that is [currently] getting help. But if it changes, people with money will want to buy in.”
Speaking to the DAILY NATION yesterday during a clean-up at the Drill Hall Beach, Springer said this would result in the programme not reaching those it was designed for.
