Workers must play their part

WORKERS have been reminded of the need to play their part and make reciprocal sacrifices even as Government sought to provide incentives to stimulate the economy and safeguard jobs.
The reminder came today from Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Senator Maxine McClean, as she introduced the Income Tax (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill.
She told workers they must be committed to productivity in these uncertain economic times in which neither Government nor employers could guarantee employment without the workers’ requisite efficiency and proper service.
“This must be done as Government tries to keep people employed and also tries to retain business and attract new business,” she said.McClean said the incentives contained in the Bill, which amends the Income Tax Act to give effect to some of the proposals made in the 2010 and 2011 Budgets, must be balanced with sacrifices.
Citing the removal of tax allowances on credit union savings in the 2010 Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals, she said despite the pursuant outcry, many had recognized that the credit unions had a part to play and a sacrifice to make in the island’s economic recovery. (RJ)
