THE?SUDDEN?resignation last month of Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands has left Government in a bit of a security quandary.
However, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who is off island, has confirmed that the matter is “under active consideration” by his administration and that special provisions will be put in place, not only for former Governors General but Prime Ministers as well.
“There are arrangements in place, but I prefer to speak about them when I get back to Barbados,” he told the SUNDAY?SUN in a brief telephone interview yesterday.
Stuart pointed out that with Sir Clifford’s departure, Government for the first time had been forced to consider security arrangements for a former Governor General. He noted that four of the six previous heads of state died in office, while Sir Hugh Springer was said to be gravely ill when he demitted office back in June 1990. (MB)
