PSV pressure

Some operators in the public service vehicle (PSV) sector say they are struggling and have labelled their losses as astronomical.

Communications and marketing officer with the Alliance Owners of Public Transport, Mark A. Haynes, said drivers were still adhering to the 50 per cent capacity rule, which was implemented to allow for social distancing in the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said they were hit the hardest a few weeks ago when the country was shut down and people were not allowed to shop at supermarkets.

“No traffic at all placed a financial burden on the sector. Many of the workers in the industry did not see it as viable to run their vehicles because there was no one to commute, but when the system changed, we did see a marginal increase of commuters and some of the drivers came out and tried to capitalise. But we are trying to catch ourselves,” he said. (TG)
