ST JOHN’S – Four members of the security forces were remanded into custody on Monday after they appeared in court on a charge of murdering Bruce Greenaway, whose body was found at Indian Creek on the outskirts of the capital, on April 13, a few days after he had been reported missing.
Police officer, Jason Modeste, 44, and members of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force – Shakiel Thomas, 25; Armal Warner, 26; and 20-year-old Aliyah Martin, have been charged with murder and will return to court on September 23.
Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel-Edwards remanded the four accused to Her Majesty’s Prison despite a plea from defence lawyer Lawrence Daniel that they be housed at Camp Blizzard.
There was tight security around the court building on Monday.
A post mortem had found that Greenaway, a father of two, died as a result of asphyxiation and Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister, E.P. Chet Greene, in a statement last month, said he was joining with all the residents of his St Paul constituency in anticipating “absolutely no delays in bringing the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice”.
Attorney General and Minister of National Security, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, had earlier said he was confident that the police will conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the death of Greenaway.
The victim was last seen in the company of members of the ABDF, during the period when the island was under a curfew as part of the measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The ABDF said it had taken the allegations seriously and had conducted an internal investigation into the matter with the findings handed over the police. (CMC)
