Barbados is moving to have wide-ranging legislation to protect people on the job, as well as those seeking employment, from discrimination.

Speaking on the Employment (Prevention Of Discrimination) Bill, 2020, Minister of Labour Colin Jordan said yesterday the proposed law speaks to protection of people based on their religion, hairstyles and sexual orientation.

He said the bill was based on discussions with civil society, including trade unions and members of the Social Justice Committee, as well as citizens.

“We recognise there was a strong desire to see social justice,” the minister said.

“Is it right to discriminate because of their sexual orientation?”

He criticised the “few” employers who discriminated against employees on grounds of religion, such as Seventh-Day Adventists who, for religious reasons, do not work on Saturday. (HH)
