Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley is questioning the “coincidence of timing” between the tabling of legislation in the House of Assembly for permanent appointment of public servants in acting positions and the upcoming by-election in St George.
“We are now in the throes of an election exercise in Barbados, particularly in the constituency of St George North. So we have a measure like this being brought in this way using the mechanism of this Parliament to ensure that it is achieved on the eve of a by-election in St George North,” Atherley observed in his contribution to debate on the Public Service (Appointment) Bill 2020 yesterday.
“Those out there who are affected by this know who they are and it is not so much necessarily that I must know who they are . . . . more importantly, it is that they know who they are and knowing who are, may tend to be indicative of how they are likely to vote in any election which comes around the corner . . . .”
Atherley, however, supported the legislation “on principle”. (GC)
