Call for better security at all schools

Classes resumed yesterday at St Leonard’s Boys’ School, after it was closed on Wednesday because of an attempted robbery.

And the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) will still be pressing for increased security measures to be put in place at schools across the country.

BUT general secretary Herbert Gittens made that point yesterday after he reiterated the need for improved protection at many educational institutions.

“Not all schools have security guards and night watchmen but there are reasons for all those issues. But we still would implore the authorities to work to ensure security becomes a priority at all educational institutions.

“Because it can’t be taken for granted . . . . You have staff, security, teachers, students and their health and wellness is critical, so we support any efforts by management and the ministry to improve security at the school to make life safer for everybody,” Gittens said yesterday. (TG)
