Deputy DPP: Parents should be accountable

Parents have a duty to look after and raise their children properly and when they don’t and those children break the law, parents should be hauled before the court as well.

This was the view of Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Alliston Seale as he dealt with a young manslayer, who was neglected by his family and went on to kill a homosexual who made advances towards him at 16.

“We cannot bring children into society and then not do the greatest thing and that is look after them,” Seale said yesterday.

“We have animals that we look after. We have jobs that we look after and we make sure we go to work and we do the best we could. The greatest responsibility which we have is to our children, and we seem not to pay the attention that we should to them,” he said.

Seale was speaking as Raffique Vincent Murray, now 20, of Sinckler Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, returned to the No. 2 Supreme Court. He had pleaded not guilty to murdering David Delisle Harewood on October 3, 2016, but confessed to unlawfully killing him – manslaughter – on the same date. (HLE)
