Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) both paid tribute to cricket lover and supporter Gordon “Butch” Stewart who passed away on Monday night.

“CWI mourns the passing of The Honourable Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart OJ and sends our sincere condolences to his family. He was a life-long West Indies cricket fan, fierce champion of the Caribbean and a major commercial partner,” said president Ricky Skerritt.

“He was also a true West Indian legend in his own right. He established unique and very successful Caribbean brands and created many opportunities for young men and women across this region to grow.”

WIPA said Stewart earned national honours from his native Jamaica and several honorary degrees from local and international universities because of his valuable contribution to the region in business and philanthropy.

“Stewart, described as an avid cricket lover, founded Sandals in 1941 and went on to form or acquire stakes in several other businesses. Sandals sponsored West Indies cricket on several occasions and has been the primary sponsor for the senior teams in the recent past,” WIPA said in a release.

President Wavell Hinds also extended condolences to the Stewarts, Sandals and ATL families.

Stewart passed away in the United States at age 79. (PR/SAT)
