Some passersby readily extended a helping hand to a man who had apparently fallen ill earlier today.

Wingrove Thomas, one of the people who offered assistance, said he called the police and the Ambulance Service to get help for the man who was lying on the sidewalk along Halls Road, St Michael.

Video taken by photographger Reco Moore showed two women who sanitised their hands and tried to make the man as comfortable as possible, while he waited for the Ambulance Service to arrive.

Thomas, who spoke with Nation News, said: “I was walking down here. I saw this gentleman here on the sidewalk and when I approached the gentleman, I was told by onlookers that he was put out of a transport vehicle, whether minibus, Transport board I don’t know. So I quickly went over and tried to assess the situation as a person who had dealt with medical [situations] before and tried to find out and ascertain what was going on with the guy.

“After I checked the guy I realised it would have to be . . . blood pressure, or something of that sort . . . . A Roving Team passed at the same time . . . and realsied after taking the guy’s blood sugar that it was low.”

Thomas said he then purchased a beverage and a mint for the man who then became more responsive. He said it “was very bad” that some passersby assumed the man was drunk and did not try to help him.

“It is heartbreaking. I had some business to do today. I decided to put my business on hold because I can’t let somebody like this [not be] dealt with because at the end of the day he is somebody’s son, father, uncle and we all need each other,” he said. (KG)
