Slow start likely for track season

Local track and field coaches say it will be a tough assignment to adequately prepare athletes for the April 24 start of the new season.

In fact, national coach Alwyn Babb believes there will be a decline in the number of competitors for the first two meets at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.

“I think the numbers will be reduced somewhat because of preparation time. Some athletes have had the opportunity to stay as fit as possible but in terms of organised training we were unable to do that. Hopefully after the third event we will see some improved performances leading to qualification for regional meets,” Babb told Saturday Sport yesterday.

“At the Usain Bolt [ Sports Complex] we are hoping that having access to a synthetic track would assist much better than if we have to compete on grass. Hopefully we will get enough time to get the athletes ready for qualifications and to reduce the number of injuries that may occur,” he added.
