Yesterday’s bad weather was due to a freak system.
It was so described by Director of Meteorological Services Sabu Best, who said that in the space of just over an hour, it sneaked up on Barbadians as they slept, then stunned them out of their slumber with almost 500 lightning strikes per minute, thunder that roared like a lion, and winds that blew tops off houses.
In addition, six inches of rain fell in the space of 90 minutes.
In a press conference yesterday evening, Best warned Barbadians to brace for more rain and high winds, with a couple of tropical waves also expected to affect the island from tomorrow and probably into early next week, easing up late Tuesday night.
He explained that Met Office officials had issued a bulletin on Wednesday which forecast excess rainfall, probably in the region an inch. (BA)
