THOUSANDS OF UNDERPRIVILEGED FAMILIES received close to $900 000 worth of food from the Welfare Department last month.
Despite criticisms, Government officials are maintaining that they are doing all they can to provide eligible individuals with assistance to pay their utilities and rent.
Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde, and Chief Welfare Officer Deborah Norville, made those points yesterday at the Warrens Office Complex where the Massy Foundation Barbados Inc. donated $50 000 worth of food vouchers.
Norville said since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic which led to an increase in unemployment, more people had applied for cash grants to make rent and utility payments, and for food. The latter topped the list. (TG)
