If all goes well, Barbados will soon roll out its new digital ID cards.
Minister of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology Senator Kay McConney announced that the smart cards were still being tested.
“I know a lot of people are asking about what is happening with the national ID at this time but we are moving forward at this time,” she said. “Two Fridays ago we were able to send a fully printed, fully secured card to the organisation that oversees and ensures that those types of travel documents are meeting compliance to be used as travel documents.”
She was speaking during the launch of PBS (Productive Business Solutions) Ltd’s expanded location in Sheraton Mall, Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church, on Thursday.
McConney said it was Government’s intention to get them distributed to Barbadians as soon as possible, but making sure the ID was on par with international standards was paramount, adding that Barbados would still have to engage in negotiations with other states to get them accepted worldwide. (SB)
