Court system ‘can be speedier’

A gun case that went from search warrant to High Court sentence in three months demonstrates what can be achieved by the Barbadian judicial system.

“The Practice Direction issued by this court in 2020 anticipates and states clearly that the intent of these courts is to arrive at a position where defendants in this jurisdiction can feel confident that they will see a trial within three months of the date of indictment, but in no more than six months,” Justice Carlisle Greaves declared yesterday.

“This case demonstrates what proactive case management by the Supreme Court judges can achieve.

“Even in this case, we ought not to have had to go through the gymnastics that we have done in order to get this case before the court as quickly as we have,” he said.

Justice Greaves made the comments as he dealt with Quasim Alex Ricardo Richards in the No. 3 Supreme Court. (HLE)
