Government will be launching a COVID Community Engagement project across Barbados this weekend.

Lead coordinator of the programme, Arlene Husbands, explained yesterday that one of its major aims is to bring about change in behaviour. She added the programme will be patterned after the multi-sectoral approach used decades ago to tackle the social issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, such as stigmatisation.

“As we look around the world within the context of this pandemic, we realised that we needed to have community engagement as one of the pillars that we must work on, along with miscommunication. We recognised that these are two key pillars that need to be addressed in any pandemic or epidemic,” said Husbands.

She was part of a virtual press briefing hosted by COVID-19 Public Advisor David Ellis.
Husbands pointed out that messaging was most effective when people can be reached where they are most comfortable, such as within their communities. (CLM)
