Gunman’s 3-year sentence suspended

Poverty should not condemn a man to prison because he cannot pay a fine.

“It is not the desire of any court to imprison a convict merely because he is unable to pay a fine when others who are in a better position to do so are allowed to do so. So a man’s poverty ought not to be the reason for his imprisonment,” said Justice Carlisle Greaves.

However, he added, the court had to be careful about whether it should release McPherson Lee-Anderson DaCosta Mayers back into society given his psychiatric issues, tendency towards violence and his gun charge.

The judge made the comments as Mayers reappeared before him in the No. 3 Supreme Court. (HLE)
