Fit to re-enter society.

That was the assessment, given by psychiatrist Dr Ronald Chase, of long lifers John Brathwaite and Theo Bourne who have spent a combined 74 years locked away at the Psychiatric Hospital.

However, said Chase, the two would first need to spend some transitional time in the hospital’s quarter-way house, in addition to reacquainting themselves with society and members of their family.

The senior psychiatrist made the assessment yesterday when Bourne and Brathwaite’s matters were called in the No. 2 Supreme Court.

The cases of the two men first came to light in August 2021 when Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim, who represented the two in association with attorneys Kyle Walkes, Martie Garnes and Latisha Springer, told the court their cases were drawn to his attention when he was investigating another such matter at the Black Rock facility.

Bourne has so far spent 41 years at the Psychiatric Hospital having been sent there on October 23, 1980, while Brathwaite has been there since October 1988, for a total of 33 years. (HLE)
