Gros Islet – A robust century from Kyle Mayers rescued West Indies and gave them a 106-run lead over Bangladesh in the second Test yesterday in St Lucia.

The ambidextrous Barbadian all-rounder was undefeated on 126 and shared two crucial stands with Jermaine Blackwood and Joshua da Silva to propel the Windies to 340-5 in their first innings at the close on the second day.

The Caribbean side were briefly in trouble before lunch when they lost three wickets and stumbled to 137-4 at lunch, but Mayers added 116 either side of lunch with Blackwood for the fifth wicket and an unbroken 92 either side of tea with Da Silva to stabilise the innings.

Left-hander Mayers reached his milestone from 150 balls in grand style when he followed a crisp drive off Shoriful Islam through mid-off for his 14th four with a one-legged pull off a short delivery from the left-arm pacer over square leg for his second six off successive balls.

It was the second Test hundred for Mayers against the visitors, following his unbeaten 210 against them in his debut Test on the Tour of Bangladesh in February last year in Chattogram. (AR)
