A LONG STRIP of green, chain-linked fence greets sea-bathers at Maxwell Beach in Christ Church, while taxi drivers who operated for many years from the open area opposite Sunbay Hotel on Maxwell Coast Road, are now forced to park next to the road.
Residents and taxi operators voiced their disapproval yesterday of the fence that went up between Sunday and Monday. They argued and said though they could not determine what happened with their property, the wished an access footpath was provided.
The taxi drivers, who declined to give their names, said the erection of the fence would make it difficult for people wanting to access the beach.
“I know it is [private] land but to come and block off everything so that people cannot get to the beach, that is not right,” one taximan said. Another added: “They never came and told us anything about the fence, but we saw the workmen come and put up the fence.”
One man said there was a beach access by Sea Breeze Hotel, but the others countered by saying that was full of bush and not a genuine access. (LK)
