Cape Town – A weak third quarter undermined Barbados and they had to settle for 14th position at the Netball World Cup in South Africa after Zimbabwe crushed them 75-48 yesterday in South Africa.

The Barbadians appeared to be offering a stiff challenge in the contest at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, but the Zimbabweans wore them down with a 22-7 scoring in the third period and the Caribbean side had no way back.

Barbados were trailing 14-15 after the first quarter and 28-30 at half-time, but they lost the plot badly in the third stanza, and Zimbabwe jumped to a 52-35 lead with one period remaining, and it was all over for the “Bajan Gems”.

Veteran Barbadian Latonia Blackman played at goal shooter for the entire match and ended with 17 goals from 19 attempts while former England international Kadeen Corbin, moved to goal attack and finished with 29 from 32. Teenager Damia Walrond added two from five. (CMC)
