A 63-year-old unemployed man has pleaded guilty to knowingly permitting marijuana production to take place on his premises.
Joseph Nathaniel Codrington, of Sherbourne No.3, St John, appeared in the District “C” Magistrates’ Court last Friday and admitted committing the offence on August 15.
He was granted $10 000 bail, but had no surety, so Magistrate Joy-Ann Clarke remanded him to Dodds Prison until Thursday, when he will return before her. He is being represented by attorney Rasheed Belgrave.
The prosecutor told the court police were investigating another matter when they executed a search warrant at the house Codrington owns and occupies. They searched both inside and out, and in the backyard found 26 plants growing in plastic buckets.
When they asked Codrington to account for them, he replied: “How you mean if I does see them? I does go out there every day; them is herb plants.” Both he and the plants were taken to Oistins Police Station, where he later denied having any knowledge of them, but admitted he was in control of the house.
The plants weighed 5.95 kilogrammes with an estimated street value of $23 000. (SD)
