It was a showcase of pure Bajan domination when Barbados’ men’s and women’s teams comfortably conquered their Vincentian opponents at the Historic Garrison Savannah on Saturday in the inaugural Island Sevens Rugby Tournament.

It was also the first international rugby match in Barbados since the COVID-19 pandemic. Barbados’ men’s teams were the Jet Blues and the H1X1 Barbarians, with the women’s team going by the name Bajan Pride.

On what was the hottest recorded day in September, at a scorching 34.2 degrees Celsius, scores of avid supporters still gathered at the venue to see the St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) men face off against the Jet Blues in the first match which commenced at 12:15 p.m.

The Jet Blues drew first blood with a quick try and conversion less than five minutes into the match, and romped home from there. The final score was 38-5 in favour of the local men, which set a precedent that would persist throughout the tournament.  (DG)
