For hitting a man on his buttocks with a shovel three times, a St Michael man will have to fork out $1 500.

Additionally, 22-year-old Kwane Youshain Springer, of Block 2D, Farm Road, Deacons Farm, will have to keep out of trouble for the next six months or he will spend three months in prison.

And while his unemployed mother was present at the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday to assure the money would be paid, Magistrate Douglas Frederick told her he did not wish to see her in the courtroom again.

The sentences were handed down after Springer pleaded guilty to assaulting Kobie Harewood on January 7.

It was his second court appearance in the space of ten months. He pleaded guilty last March to having cannabis and had to pay a $1 200 fine.

Even though his mother said this was the last time she would be there to bail him out, Magistrate Frederick told her: “The next time he gets into trouble, I don’t want to see you.”

The court heard from prosecutor Sergeant Neville Reid that Harewood was in a friend’s yard fixing a bicycle when Springer saw him and referred to him by a gay slur. He then told him to leave or he would strike him with a shovel.

Harewood did not respond, but as he got up to leave, Springer struck him three times with the shovel. Harewood went home and told his mother and the matter was reported to the Black Rock Police Station.

In his defence, Springer said he and Harewood had been involved in a previous altercation and were not on speaking terms.

He also said Harewood was in front of his house and not in anyone’s yard.

Magistrate Frederick gave him one month to pay the $1 500 compensation or he will spend three months in jail. (RB)
