Already a hockey sporting icon in Barbados, Andrea Nichols copped the coveted Esther Maynard Icon Award 2024 on Saturday night when the 5th edition was held at the Barbados Olympic Association’s Headquarters, Wildey.

Nichols, who moved from being a student-athlete at the Springer Memorial Girls’ School to return as a teacher in August 1972, received great applause when she beat out worthy contenders Diana Clarke of equestrian and Penny McIntyre of sailing for the award.

Previous winners were Esther Maynard, Kathy Harper-Hall, Sonia O’Neal and June Rudder.

Among those present to cheer Nichols were president of the BOA Sandra Osborne, BOA’s Office Manager, Glyne Clarke, Director of Sports Neil Murrell, Marsha Boyce, chairperson of the BOA Gender Equality Commission, Maynard and Rudder. (KB)
