Amidst the Christmas hustle and bustle, well-meaning customers have been warned against being taken for a ride.
In a paid advertisement last week, Unicomer, parent company of Courts, advised customers not to enter into hire purchase contracts for others.
“We at Unicomer (Barbados) Ltd t/a Courts have noticed a worrying trend where some of our very good customers are being asked to purchase items on hire purchase credit accounts for third parties. In most cases, these third parties do not pay the accounts as per the contract agreement, resulting in negative impact on your credit rating and restricting easy access to future hire purchase accounts,” the advertisement read.
One debt recovery expert told the WEEKEND NATION the practice of asking someone to purchase an item for you and then defaulting on hire purchase payments was nothing new.
He said he had seen situations where customers had entered into third party contracts for hire purchase-bought items, only to see the person they bought it for leave the jurisdiction. (AD)
