The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) has kicked into high gear its efforts to resolve the issues with the south coast sewage leaks.
But that fix can’t come soon enough for residents in Worthing and Hastings, Christ Church, who simply cannot deal with the stinking mess any longer.
A SUNDAY SUN team visited the affected communities along Highway 7 Thursday to speak to those in the area.
Residents and business owners who did not wish to be named, expressed their anger and frustration dealing with the effluent and its accompanying smell.
One questioned how the Minister responsible for Water Resource Management Dr David Estwick was not required to step down after the ongoing sewage problem.
“How can I be paying a man so much money in taxpayers’ money and this **** be happening? They would fire me if I’m working and come in five minutes late,” the angry resident said as he stood near the bubbling manhole outside Lanterns Mall in Hastings.
“And we’re paying a man hundreds of thousands of dollars in a time like now?” he reasoned.
One worker at a nearby shop told the SUNDAY SUN that the stench coming from the effluent was actually driving away customers.
Meanwhile, a resident who wished to be identified as “Lil Giant” said the smell was affecting those who lived in the community.
While the smell was tough to deal with, Lil Giant said that the location of the pedestrian crossing outside Lanterns Mall needed to be changed in light of the bubbling manholes.
“You see the white lines where you cross? The zebra crossing needs to be put a different place for people to cross,” the resident said.
“A lot of old people can’t cross the road here because this sewage here makes it a big problem.
“People won’t cross at the zebra crossing because they’re avoiding the water,” Lil Giant added.
Adam Davis, who frequents the area, said the smell and water created a problem while going home at night and the scent gave him a headache. (AD)
