28 from Luther Thorne treated for smoke inhalation

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s mass casualty response was triggered today after staff and students of Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School experienced respiratory challenges due to smoke inhalation.

In a release, the hospital said it received an emergency response call at 11:45 a.m. and a pre-hospital emergency response team responded to the scene at noon.

It comprised three ambulances, six emergency medical technicians and two ambulance officers under the leadership of Dr David Byer, a consultant in the Accident and Emergency Department.

A total of 28 people were seen. Seventeen people were treated at the scene and discharged, two patients were transported to the Sir Winston Scott Polyclinic, two to the Edgar Cochrane Polyclinic, and seven people were transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. 

The pre-hospital emergency response team was stood down at 2:45 p.m. (PR/NB)
