What do you get when you remix Gabby with Rihanna, with some soaring choral arrangements that had the feel of a Negro spiritual, and throw in some beatboxing to boot?
You get Riots And Rebellion, the musical performance by the Marlon Legall Project that brought the audience at Combermere School to its feet at the third NIFCA semi-finals on Sunday. The performance seamlessly merged Gabby’s Riots In The Land with Rihanna’s Man Down, and was the highlight of a night filled with quality acts.
Legall appeared on stage no less than four times during the night, as performer and musical director with both the eponymous project, and the smaller Elite Vox in various performances. All were enjoyable, interesting arrangements.
Music dominated the night’s proceedings and the Alleyne School Choir and Fuzion Band also acquitted themselves well. Alleyne opened the show with a stirring rendition of Hold On and Total Praise. Fuzion also remixed a Gabby classic in Barbados We Come From which took the market calls of Bridgetown Market in a jazzy direction that was well received. (AL-F)
