Atherley sparks Cougars’ win

THIS TIME the league’s top player got the better of its top team.

Toni Atherley had 22 points and 19 rebounds to put Lady Cougars on the brink of a historic title via Wednesday’s shocking 63-49 Game 1 upset of defending champs Preferred Insurance Brokers Pinelands 63 in the No.1 Beauty Supplies and Beauty Exchange Women’s basketball finals.

It was just another of those classic performances at the Barbados Community College, where the national captain looked near unstoppable while shrugging off multiple defenders to dominate the series opener.

And it came against a heavily favoured champion side that dropped one game all season en route to repeating as knockout queens and easily returning to a second successive title series. (JM)
