Social activist and trade unionist Roshanna Trim is set to be sworn in as Barbados’ newest Government senator on Wednesday at State House.

The appointment comes on the recommendation of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

Trim will fill the vacancy left by former senator Chad Blackman, who now serves as a Member of Parliament.

Known for her work in youth advocacy and social development, Trim has served in several leadership roles, including President of the Barbados Youth Development Council, Prime Minister of the Youth Parliament, Chairman of the National Youth Policy Coordinating Committee, and co-founder of the Pink Parliament.

Her appointment makes her the youngest senator currently serving in the Upper House.

In a statement, Prime Minister Mottley said, “While young in age, Roshanna has spent her life championing equality and justice, and creating spaces for youth to develop and lead. I have every confidence that she will bring that same commitment to the Senate, adding value and a perspective that will benefit not just her generation, but the entire nation.”

Trim, in response, expressed appreciation for the opportunity and affirmed her commitment to contributing to national development.

“I would like to thank the Prime Minister for selecting me as I recognise the importance of The Senate in our democratic process. I will be certain to carry on the rich tradition of excellence, while bringing a fresh perspective in debates,” she said. (PR)
