The last lap weekend of this year’s Crop Over season kept many in Barbados’ hospitality and transport sectors “on their toes”, with hoteliers and taxi operators now looking to keep the momentum going as CARIFESTA XV approaches.

“There was a definite buzz during the Crop Over season,” said Ryan Forde, chief executive officer of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA).

“A lot of people were on the island, especially from around the region, North America and the United Kingdom, enjoying the festival. Most hotels, especially on the South Coast, were seeing that buzz during the festival,” he said.

While official numbers are still being compiled, Forde said bookings ahead of CARIFESTA were already trending five per cent above the same period last year. He stressed that summer events were critical to driving business in what was usually a slower period.

“During the summer and slower periods, there needs to be more events, festivals, meetings, more health and wellness events and activities that are different from the typical leisure travel that you

would get in winter.

“Once you see that, then the properties, restaurants and attractions will start to see increased business,” he said. (TG)
