‘Work on building codes’

THE HEAD OF the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) wants the public and private sectors to forge partnerships to implement building codes across the region.

Ronald Jackson said this should be done in the times between adverse weather events.

Jackson was speaking at a media conference, at CDEMA’s Lower Estate headquarters, to give an update of the relief efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 system.

Admitting that only so much could be done when faced with a Category 5 storm, Jackson, however, declared that the region’s building codes needed not only to be updated, but to be implemented and enforced. (HLE)
