The tenth tropical storm of the season has formed over the open Atlantic and interests in the Leeward Islands have been put on notice.
Even as they prepare for the impact of the “extremely dangerous” Hurricane Irma, they have been told to monitor the future progress of Tropical Storm Jose.
At 11 a.m. the centre of Jose was located near latitude 12.3 North, longitude 39.1 West.
Jose is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph (20 km/h) and a movement toward the west or west-northwest at a slightly faster rate of forward speed is expected during the next two days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.
Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Jose could become a hurricane by Friday.
Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the centre.
The estimated minimum central pressure is 1008 mb (29.77 inches). (NB)
